The core building blocks of the cloud NFV infrastructure are the server and the VMs that the server hosts. The applications that run in the VMs have different resource requirements – CPU, I/O, memory, etc. As such, operators must deal with different VM profiles, and the ability to place them efficiently on the server infrastructure has a direct impact on the operator’s ability to rapidly deliver the best services. Today, these challenges result in silos of servers that are configured differently, taking down operational efficiency. What is needed is a homogenous server infrastructure managed centrally using tools like OpenStack, where VMs with any profile can be placed anywhere in the server infrastructure and moved at will while maintaining the highest levels of application performance.
The Corigine Agilio SmartNIC platform offloads virtual switching or routing in the NFV infrastructure (NFVi) from the server CPU to the Agilio CX SmartNIC. It plugs into open source virtual switching (Open vSwitch) or virtual routing (Contrail vRouter) layers on one side and works with a wide range of management and orchestration environments such as OpenStack and Open Daylight, as well as commercial solutions from leading OEMs. Innovative SR-IOV and Express Virtio (XVIO) implementations enable users to maintain all SDN capabilities available in virtual switch and router implementations. Customer defined data plane processing, such as distributed security and in-band telemetry, can be augmented using programming languages such as P4, C and eBPF.
